What a long strange trip it’s been

$1,212.00

“What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been” (2016) is a sculptural assemblage built from a genuine cow skull recovered in the Appalachian Mountains. The work reflects the spirit of the American counterculture and pays homage to the enduring legacy of the Grateful Dead, particularly their legendary guitarist Jerry Garcia.

Blending organic remains with artificial foliage and layered collage elements, the piece unfolds like a visual improvisation — much like the extended, surreal musical journeys for which the Dead became known. Forms emerge and dissolve across the surface: eyes, patterns, and fragments merging into a dreamlike landscape shaped by memory, time, and transformation.

Constructed from various found materials and sealed in a durable two-part epoxy finish, the sculpture combines natural textures with vibrant color and intricate detail. Balancing decay and renewal, the work captures the strange beauty of the road — a tribute to the spirit of exploration, imagination, and the long, strange trip that defines both art and life.
